When your hands already look good, nail color is just icing on the cake. But if you’re going to wear color on your nails, you want it to look nice, and last for as long as possible. After all, what good is a manicure if your polish chips after only a couple of days? Keep your hands looking their best by making your nail polish last longer with these manicure tips.
Apply Nail Color Properly
When people prepare to apply nail polish, they instinctively shake the bottle to mix the color. But doing this creates air bubbles, and makes the polish difficult to apply evenly. Air bubbles also make your nail color more likely to peel after it dries. One of the best manicure tips to prevent this from happening is to roll the bottle between the palms of your instead of shaking it up.
When fingernails are oily, and dirty, nail color won’t adhere properly. So before you apply new nail polish, take a clean cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover and wipe it across the fingernails.
Apply your nail color when you have plenty of time to let it dry. And never apply nail color in thick blobs. Polish should be applied in two to three thin, even coats so that it sets properly. Let each coat dry completely before adding another one.
Cold helps nail polish dry faster. So you can either hold your hands under a cold running faucet (slow stream) for a few minutes, or fill a bowl with ice water and dip your polished fingernails in the water for about two-minutes. After the nail color dries, use a cuticle stick dipped in polish remover to remove excess nail color from the skin around the nails.
To keep your polish looking fresh, and help it last longer, apply a thin layer of clear topcoat every two to three days.
Repair Chipped Nail Polish
Sometimes despite our best efforts, nail polish will chip. But chips can be easily repaired by buffing down the ragged edges of the chipped area and filling it in with nail color. Once this dries, follow with a coat of color on the entire offending nail to smooth it out.
With manicure tips such as applying nail polish in thin coats, letting color dry thoroughly, and repairing chips as they happen, your nail color will last a long time, and your manicures will look flawless.
